Much as this note is lovely, it is slightly disappointing that the letter does not turn out to be SECRET orders. The inner padding is bespoke and perfectly carved to reveal the watch on its steel bracelet with slots for the COSC certificate and a letter from Vertex HQ, in old typewriter font signed off by Don. It looks and feels like a case that should contain a Plutonium Core sphere in our spy movie. The M60 is presented in a genuine Peli Case (Codename: RUCK), which is indestructible and buoyant. The Vertex Aqualion ticks both boxes, so if these criteria are essential, the M60 already has a head start on many Swiss Giants. For those unfamiliar with this ISO, it offers the chance to qualify under top-tier specs for professional underwater watches. Less so models certified to COSC accuracy standards and ISO 6425. The market has plenty of robust dive watches to choose from. Having re-animated the Vertex brand in 2015, Don has systematically been creating stunning watches with superior build quality and modern innovative design that pays homage to the original models that forged the legend. In a further nod to his grandfather, all serial numbers of the new M60 are prefixed with FN standing for "Fear Nothing", the literal deciphering of Dreadnought. However, Don, the current family owner, has managed to secure rights to the accompanying lion logo and can freely emblazon his watches. Sadly, that dramatic name is protected elsewhere now. The name Aqualion and the corresponding symbol, a mythical half-lion, half-fish creature, traces its history back to the early 1900s when Don Cochrane's grandfather first created the watch brand name Dreadnought. Spatial attention was shown to modulate early evoked gamma-band power in response to audio-visual stimuli 9. While several studies have investigated synchronised neuronal oscillations during multisensory processing 8, evidence for the influence of top-down attention in this context is still very sparse. Moreover, it is reasonable to assume the participation of additional brain regions which – depending on the task – govern multisensory integration and exert top-down control functions 6, 7. For tasks with stimulation in more than one modality, the different sensory cortices involved have to be activated and integrated into a coherent network. Multisensory processing is particularly well suited to study the formation and function of brain networks because the informational entry points into the processing system are clearly segregated and their locations are well known. Since these processes are ubiquitous also in other cognitive domains, specifying their relationship to different brain rhythms contributes to a general understanding of how oscillatory activity subserves cognition. In the present study, we were specifically interested to relate activation, inhibition, and cognitive control processes to concurrent changes of high- and low-frequency oscillatory brain activity during a multisensory attention task. Such synchronisation can occur with diverse dynamics, and it has been proposed that oscillations in high- and low-frequency ranges might index different cortical operations in local and large-scale networks 5. One promising candidate mechanism is the synchronisation of neuronal activity in distributed networks 3, 4. Considerable progress in identifying relevant attention networks in the brain has been made in the last decades, and research has started to work out the underlying functional mechanisms by which these networks are formed and how they operate 1, 2. The ability to direct attention voluntarily to specific aspects of our environment is essential for flexible, goal-directed behavior. Together, these results offer an integrative view on the concurrence of oscillations at different frequencies during multisensory attention. Crossmodal congruence modulated beta-band coherence in mid-cingulate and superior temporal cortex. Frontal cortex was found to exert attentional control through increased low-frequency phase synchronisation. Moreover, alpha-band coherence decreased in visual cortex. We found that attention led to increased high-frequency gamma-band activity and decreased lower frequency theta-, alpha-, and beta-band activity in early sensory cortex areas. By employing a task that required the evaluation of the congruence of audio-visual stimuli, we promoted the formation of widespread cortical networks including early sensory cortices as well as regions associated with cognitive control. In this study, we used a novel multisensory attention paradigm to investigate attention-modulated cortical oscillations over a wide range of frequencies using magnetencephalography in healthy human participants. ![]() If GIFs are for real - which people are certainly betting on - the money will come. And perhaps they’ll continue to share those GIFs with Riffsy instead of competitors like PopKey or Giphy. Perhaps that’s the case, and perhaps one day they’ll be willing to pay to get those GIFs out to smartphone-wielding consumers. ![]() Now I think every studio thinks that GIFs are a pillar of their social media strategy.” “Even a year ago, GIFs were not part of their core strategy when they put a movie out. “I think the studios are embracing this because they see this as the new trailer: This is the new way of promoting a piece of content,” McIntosh told Re/code. The partnerships with movie studios help to avoid that issue, but they also surface familiar, relevant stuff to Riffsy’s users. Like Facebook and Twitter, McIntosh says Riffsy is DMCA compliant, meaning it will take down content it doesn’t own if the content owner complains. So far, Riffsy has been surfacing the content to users for free in exchange for some promotion and, well, the content. Riffs has already partnered with those studios around movie launches like “Pitch Perfect 2” and “Taken 3.” The studios create bite-sized GIFs of moments from the film that Riffsy users then share to one another - promoting the movie without ever feeling like they’re promoting the movie. That game plan (which McIntosh isn’t thinking about!) relies on content, like the kind of high-end stuff created by NBCUniversal and 21st Century Fox. It still is, for some, and while Riffsy CEO David McIntosh is standing by the oft-mentioned Silicon Valley mantra that he’s focused on growth, not monetization, it is interesting to look at how a company like Riffsy might turn GIFs into a viable tech business. Back in March, it was one of the first partner apps to join Facebook’s Messenger platform, and earlier this fall it raised $10 million in funding from venture capital firms like Menlo Ventures and Redpoint Ventures.Ī few years ago, the idea of building a business on a niche keyboard or animated GIFs would have been hard to wrap your head around. It is also the exclusive GIF provider for LinkedIn. Last week, Riffsy announced an exclusive partnership deal with messaging startup Kik. There are more than half a dozen GIF keyboards that do something like this in the App Store, but for some reason, Riffsy seems to have separated itself from the pack. GIFs are a fun way for people to express themselves, akin to stickers and emojis and memes (which all have their own keyboards, too). Instead of saying you’re sad, send a GIF of a teary-eyed Spongebob Squarepants. GIF keyboards temporarily replace the text keyboard on your phone so it’s easy to find and send short looping video clips when words just won’t cut it. Riffsy, which offers a GIF keyboard for both iPhones and Android phones, seems to be making about as much noise as a GIF keyboard can make, having garnered exclusive partnerships and new funding.
